Interesting Facts

The first ever East Anglian Derby took place in 1947 and was run over a slightly shorter distance of 457metres, as opposed to today, where it is run over 462metres. The winning greyhound, Magpie Rose, set a record of 29.52 secs, which only lasted for two years before being beaten in 1949 by March Wind, a female trained by F A Ahern.

Charlie Lister OBE managed to leave a lasting impression on the race after having achieved success on four seperate occassions between 2006-2010, with Fear Zafanoic – an Australian greyhound bred by Mr Emmet Hazlet and owned by T&J Apap – being his most memorable winner. The legendary trainer, born in Nottingham, UK, also managed to acheive great success in the English Greyhound Derby where he’s claimed an Unparalleled seven championships during his stellar career.

Historical Info

In its early years the East Anglian Derby was unlicensed by what was then known as the National Greyhound Racing Club, an organisation responsible for regulating, licensing laying down the rules for greyhound racing in Great Britain in the early part of the twentieth century. It was not until 1975 that the race became affiliated with the organisation, and it was not until 2009 that it fell under the authority of the Greyhound Board of Great Britain after the two joined forces.

It was not until 2013 after a two-year hiatus that prize money was awarded to the winner. In 2014, £12000 was awarded to the winner, £2500 to the second-place competitor, and £1500 to the third place. Since then, the prize money has become even greater, with the lucky winner taking home between £12,500-£15,000, the second-place competitor between £2500-£3000, and the third-place winner between £1500-£2000.
