The idea behind the promotion is simple, Crayford will give you 50 free tickets for the venue, you sell these tickets (suggested price is £6, £1 cheaper than regular admission). Crayford Greyhounds Track Events

Crayford has evening racing on Tuesday and Saturday nights. Afternoon meetings take place on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday with meetings taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The venue’s door opening and first race details are as follows;

• Tuesday evening, doors open 5:30, first race 6:33.
• Saturday evening, doors open 6:15, first race 7:27.
• Tuesday mornings, doors open 10:00, first race 11:01.
• Thursday afternoons, doors open 1:00, first race 02:06.
• Friday afternoons, doors open 1:00, first race 02:12.
• Saturday mornings, doors open 10:00, first race 10:36.

Although the track does have some races at 874m and 714m, distances of 380m and 540m are more common.

One thing you’ll never struggle to find at Crayford is top quality events with the Ladbroke Golden Jacket, Countrywide Steel and Tubes Vase, Countrywide Steel and Tubes Guys and Dolls, Tony Morris and John Humphreys Flying Four, Kent St Leger, Shepherd Neame Vase and Guys and Dolls all being held here.

If you are the type of bettor who prefers to bet on traps rather than the dogs, then Crayford’s results show quite a variance compared to other tracks. Of the 1,357 races in 2019, trap 4 has the most winners at 19%, closely followed by traps 1 & 6. Trap 5 is the least successful, with a win percentage of 14%. Interestingly, the 2nd placed dog runs from trap 1 20% of the time, well ahead of the other traps.

Interesting Facts about the Stadium

Although the new stadium was opened in 1986, racing has been held on the site since 1932. Originally called Crayford & Bexleyheath Stadium, it hosted speedway for one season in 1930. Organisation of speedway events became problematic so a company called Wilson Greyhound Racing Track Ltd built a greyhound track and the first meeting took place at Easter in 1932. During 1937, a rebuilding project took place on the site which cost £50,000 ( equivalent to £ 2,381,325 today) and included a new track, two glass fronted grandstands and a restaurant. The early history of the stadium was blighted by doping scandals, cases in 1941 and 1946 led to prison sentences for those involved, and the track took the unusual step of hiring a private security firm to prevent further cases.

Racing ended at the old stadium on 18th May 1985 after owners Ladbrokes had announced a redevelopment of the twenty-acre site with five acres being used to build a new greyhound track and sports stadium. The new facilities opened on the 1st September 1985 under the new name of Crayford greyhounds stadium, Bexleyheath was dropped from the title as the new build was in a different location.

In 1987, the stadium became home to the Golden Jacket event. The prestigious race was originally based at Harringay until 1984, and before finally settling at Crayford, it spent spells at Hall Green (1985) and Monmore (1986). As the Golden Jacket event was televised, it gave an instant boost to visitor numbers and the reputation of the track. In 1990, another of Harringay’s former competitions, the Guys and Dolls race was resurrected. In recent years other defunct races have been re-introduced to Crayford such as the Gold Collar race (started in 1933 at Catford) and the Kent St Leger (originally started in Ramsgate in 1989).

The Best Site for Crayford Dog Racing

Crayford is one of four tracks owned by bookmaking giants Ladbrokes. As such, you know the venue is going to deliver an excellent and enjoyable session of racing. The facilities are what you would expect at Crayford greyhound track. If the British weather is being well, British then the glass-fronted grandstand is a great way to stay dry but still watch the racing.

The restaurant is raised above the track offers excellent views, dining is good value with a two-course meal costing £20 on Tuesday evening and £30 on Saturday; however, the meal on Saturday is three-courses. A Tote runner will place bets and receive your winnings for you while you dine.

The Crayford greyhound stadium website is of very high quality with useful information contained on it, the beginner’s guide is handy if this is going to be your first visit to watch the Crayford dogs. It was a bit disappointing to see the company charge £3 per race to watch historical runs, watching the race live on William Hill only costs a bet of £1, so that is quite a mark-up.

Despite that minor grumble, there is not much else to complain about at Crayford. A very enjoyable place to visit and a bonus that it hosts some of the biggest races in the greyhound sporting calendar.
