Henlow Greyhounds Stadium Facilities

Henlow greyhound stadium benefitted from a refurbishment in 2006, during this modernisation a new £464,000 Winning Post restaurant was built which can hold up to 200 people. The restaurant has a wide choice of meal options, and the restaurant gives great views of the action.

If you are looking for a lighter snack, then the Savana Bistro might be a better option. Serving all the favourites such as burgers, bacon rolls, sausage rolls and chips.

Value is really good with the ‘Six Pack’value deal offering free entry + free race card + Free Parking, 2 drinks, £1 Tote Bet, quarter Pounder & fries and free return admission (+ free race card on return).

The venue has special offers on drinks in the cosy Savana Bar. There are not many greyhound tracks where you can pick up 3 Jager Bombs for £10. Our favourite bar was the Coconut Bar. The outside bar is undercover and is fully heated and is the perfect place to enjoy a few drinks while watching the action up close.

If you are planning a special occasion then the function room can be hired free of charge (minimum of 50 people). Making it an ideal location for birthdays, team meetings etc..

With admission being free for all afternoon sessions, it can be a cheap day out.

Interesting Facts about the Stadium

The Westmead Hawk Henlow Derby is one of the biggest races that is held at the stadium. The event takes its name from one of the most famous and successful greyhounds that have ever graced the sport. Born in 2003, Hawk won his first English Greyhound Derby in 2005. Trailing the leaders after completing the first turn, Hawk produced a stunning burst of speed to overtake Blonde Mac and take the win by a length and three quarters. A win that earned owner Bob Morton £100,000. The next year, Westmead Hawk repeated the feat by winning the 2006 edition. This time, however, it was much closer. Trailing Mineola Farloe for much of the race, Hawk gained on the final two bends and took the race by three-quarters of a length.

The win meant that Westmead Hawk became only the fourth dog to have won the English Greyhound Derby twice. Often called the Red Rum of greyhounds, Hawk was widely expected to pick up a third victory but sadly a bad injury at Hall Green a short time after his Derby win ended his career and he was retired. The story does have a happy ending, though. One of Hawk’s puppies, Taylors Sky, followed in his famous father’s footsteps and claimed the English Greyhound Derby in 2011. While his other pup, Sidaz Jack, also won the Derby, this time in 2013. Westmead Hawk was immortalised by Madam Tussauds after his second Derby victory, becoming the first ever animal athlete to have a waxwork.

There has been Henlow dog racing at the site since 1923. Originally a straights track, greyhound racing started in 1927. During the 1930s the venue was so popular that spectators would often block the road, this problem was later solved by moving the spectator’s area. During the 1960s the meetings were held on Monday and Friday evenings. In 1976 Henlow finally became a licenced track, ending over 50 years of being an independent. In 2006, modernisation of Henlow greyhound stadium facilities was performed. Among the improvements was a new £464,000 restaurant.

In 2008, it looked like the days of dog racing at Henlow were over, a proposed development would have closed the venue. However, our Westmead Hawk story comes full circle as the dog’s owner, Bob Morton purchased the track from Tony McDonnell. This stopped the development and secured the future. This looks even more secure with Henlow signing a deal with SIS in 2018 to race every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

The Best Site for Henlow Dog Racing

If you want to experience a good old fashioned day-out, then a trip to watch Henlow dog racing comes highly recommended. While not the most modern of venues, the old stadium has a charm about it which adds to the experience.

Value is excellent, go on a Thursday night, and for less than a tenner, it’s possible to gain entry, receive a race card and get a slap-up fish and chips supper while watching the racing. It is a bit more expensive at the weekends but still a good deal.

One criticism I would have about the venue is the awful public address system they have, it is almost impossible to hear what is being said, especially in the restaurant. We routinely report the problem on every visit, but so far it hasn’t been resolved.

But overall, despite this grumble, Henlow greyhound betting offers a great day out. It is certainly not the most stylish or modern of venues but the reason you go there, to watch races, is well organised and highly professional.
