A Look at Kinsley Greyhound Betting

Locals have been Kinsley greyhound betting since 1939, and it is easy to see why. The stadium is in the scenic area between Barnsley and Pontefract and is easily reached from all over Yorkshire. Voted “Best National Greyhound Racing Club greyhound stadium in the north” in 2008, the 3,000-capacity venue has a loyal following. One of the few independent courses in the country, Kinsley is the newest NGRC licensed greyhound track in Britain. The venue has benefitted from a full refurbishment which has modernised this 1939 venue. Kinsley holds the prestigious Gymcrack race each year and holds four race meetings each week.

Kinsley Greyhounds Stadium Facilities

Despite being a historic venue, Kinsley has all the modern facilities that you would expect at a greyhound stadium. This is mainly due to a major refurbishment programme that took place in 1985 when John Curran and Keith Murrell took over the running of the track and invested heavily in the stadium.

One of the best ways to watch the Kinsley greyhounds racing is over a meal in the 160 capacity Jubilee restaurant. While the action is on, top-class waiter service is provided, and the table is yours for the duration of the meet, so it is highly recommended to pre-book a table to avoid disappointment.

The quality of the food is good, and the variety of the menu from the snack bar and the Jubilee restaurant has to be seen to be believed. 10 dishes can be ordered from the snack bar and include old favourites such as steak pie with chips, shepherd’s pie with chips and chicken leg with fries, to more unusual dishes (for a greyhound stadium) such as spare ribs with chips, chinese chicken with rice and three types of curries.

The bistro menu is just as varied with lots to choose from. We have steadily been making our way through the whole list, but so far, the full rack of ribs, deep pan pizza, scampi, lasagne and the salmon are in the top 5, but this could change after our next visit. A bonus is the 20% off if you order a starter and main course, the Yorkshire puddings and onion gravy get the vote on that combo.

One word of warning is that the venue doesn’t have a cash machine on site, and they do not offer cash-back, so bear this in mind for your betting.

Kinsley Greyhounds Track Events

Kinsley greyhound track holds four race meetings each week. On Tuesdays, the first race starts at 11:11 with the last race running at 13:59. On Fridays, the first race starts at 11:03 and the last one at 13:51. The course’s only evening racing takes place on Saturday with the first race starting at 19:33 and the last taking place at 22:35. The action on Sunday at Kinsley starts at 14:06 and the final race starts at 17:44.

The biggest race in Kinsley’s calendar is the Gymcrack race which features greyhounds over 15 months old but under two years of age. The event initially took place at Hackney Wick Stadium in 1994 but only lasted two years before it was cancelled. The race was re-introduced at Hall Green Stadium in 2000 before making a move to Kinsley in 2001. The 462m race has surged in popularity in recent times with Betfred taking over the sponsorship in 2011 from previous sponsors Skybet. Notable winners include Go Commando in 2015, Droopys Hope in 2012, Young Goldenin 2013, and Stay Loose in 2015. The first Irish trained dog took the 2017 event with Cometwopass trained by Peter Cronin.

The stadium’s future appears secure with the venue signing a deal with ARC (Arena Racing Company) in 2018 to host a Tuesday and Friday matinée meeting and a Sunday afternoon meeting.

Interesting Facts about the Stadium

Despite Kinsley greyhound stadium hosting events since 1939 and holding high profile events, it wasn’t until the year 2000 that owners John Curran and Keith Murrell applied for an NGRC licence, which was accepted at the first attempt. This meant that the course’s original distances raced of 100, 260, 330, 460 & 630 metres were changed to 275, 450, 485 and 656 metres.

The Kinsley management team, in partnership with the Trainers Association, have been at the forefront of a greyhound rehoming campaign for when the dogs can no longer race. They state that they make great pets and are surprisingly docile – a bit lazy too, but they are faithful companions! The work is in conjunction with Retired Greyhound Trust for Great Britain. The charity, whose famous patrons include Twiggy, Leona Lewis and Jilly Cooper, find suitable homes as well as ensuring the care and wellbeing of those dogs.
