Monmore Green Greyhounds Stadium Facilities
The first word that comes to mind when describing Monmore Green greyhound stadium is “soul”. The place just oozes history, and in the days of executive boxes and cocktail bars, it’s great to see a venue concentrating on the experience, rather than flash bells and whistles.
The restaurant, for example, has more a school cafeteria than the Ritz hotel but this is misleading because the food is great, service is excellent and all in a vibrant atmosphere, what more would you want? So the facilities may not be the finest, but they suit the venue.
Customer service can make or break the experience, and Monmore Green is excellent at this, the Ladbroke team are very attentive and will ensure they visit you before every race to place bets for you.
Value is really good with a £16 per person ‘Party Pack’ which gets you admission, race-card, scampi, chicken, beefburger or Veggie Burger and Chips. 2 drinks, 2 forecast Tote bets and a jackpot Tote bet. With admission being free for all afternoon sessions, it can be a cheap afternoon out.
Monmore Green Greyhounds Track Events
In any sport, it is often the misfortune of others that lead to opportunities. This certainly proved true for Monmore Green when bad weather led to the postponement of horse racing events in 1981. This led to BAGS (Bookmakers’ Afternoon Greyhound Service) fixtures introduced at Monmore Green stadium for the first time. These still run and take place on;
- Monday afternoon – First race 2.06pm.
- Tuesday afternoon – First race 2.06pm.
- Wednesday afternoon – First race 2.06pm.
- Friday afternoon – First race 2.06pm.
- Admission is free on all afternoon sessions.
- Evening racing takes place twice a week and is as follows;
- Thursday evenings – First race 6.37pm, Gates open 5.30pm.
- Saturday evenings – First race 6.33pm, Gates open 5.30pm.
- Although the race lengths do vary, the most common races are run over 264m, 480m, 630m, 684m and 835m.
You will not struggle to find top quality events at Monmore Green. Top events held at the track include Ladbrokes Midland Puppy Derby, Ladbrokes Summer Classic. Ladbrokes Midland Gold Cup, Ladbrokes Christmas Festival and the Peter John Chinn Memorial race.
Interesting Facts about the Stadium
If we were giving out awards for the coolest fact about a stadium, then Monmore Green would win the gold, silver and bronze. Because as far as we know, punk band, “Half-man, Half-biscuit” never wrote a song about any of the other tracks we have reviewed . But there it is, track 10 on the band’s Voyage To The Bottom Of The Road album, a little gem called, “Monmore, Hare’s Running”. Now I fully appreciate some of our readers will be too young or perhaps a bit more musically mature, but HMHB was an underground pop-punk band to quote Wikipedia, “Known for their satirical, sardonic, and sometimes surreal songs”.
So the bad news is, if you are hoping to read the lyrics and maybe pick up some pointers for the Monmore Thursday 6.33, I wouldn’t bother. This was the band that shot to fame by turning the beloved BBC children’s program Trumpton, into Trumpton Riots which tells the story of anarchy breaking out in the previously utopian Trumpton. They were, and still are, totally irrelevant and hardly the font of all knowledge, but good fun nonetheless.

While the connection to a Merseyside band you’ve probably never heard of, it was a tragedy that would become the building blocks of the Monmore Green greyhound track that you see today.
In 1963, fire rampaged through the main stand, almost completely destroying the venue. Although hindsight is a wonderful thing. It is easy to look back at this devastating fire and wonder if any lessons had been learnt? Just twelve years later a fire broke out during a football game between nearby Bradford City and Lincoln City. The game, which was being broadcast on live TV, caught the full horrors as the wooden stand caught alight. The structure that wasn’t dissimilar to the one at Monmore Green took minutes to be totally destroyed. Sadly 52 people lost their lives that day.
Phoenix from the flames would be an apt metaphor for the stadium’s fortune from then on. Despite the fire only forcing the closure of the stadium for a few months, vital safety work was needed before visitors were allowed back in. Ladbrokes, who still owns the track, invested heavily upon buying the stadium in 1974. The new owners installed a glass-fronted main grandstand and added a stunning restaurant. Ladbrokes continue to invest in the venue, a significant refurbishment in 2004 concentrated on greyhound welfare and introduced temperature controlled air conditioning for the Monmore Green dogs.
The Best Site for Monmore Green Dog Racing
It always seems strange to think of Ladbrokes of any sort of underdog. Especially in the betting world with the mere mention of Ladbrokes conjures up images of betting shops. But with ownership of just four UK greyhound stadiums, they are the outsiders. But who doesn’t root for the outsider?
As we said earlier in this article, Ladbrokes has been in this game for a long time, nearly 150 years. Their parent company also own Coral and the entertainment friendly, Gala bingo. So with such pedigree, it was never in doubt that this flagship venue would deliver.
A cosy rather than grand restaurant is at the venue, but that isn’t a bad thing as it enhances the intimate atmosphere at the venue. The restaurant is slightly raised so offers a good view of the Monmore Green dog racing.
Although anytime is a good time to visit, especially with so many top races at the Monmore Green greyhound betting scene. But to get the full experience we recommend you visit the stadium during evening racing, especially during the darker winter nights. The stadium looks spectacular lit up and is genuinely spine-tingling good.
