It’s worth mentioning that £1 from the admission cost is donated to Poole Retired Greyhounds charity. While other venues raise awareness about retired greyhounds, it is fantastic that the stadium financially contribute. On Tuesday, the admission price is £7, It is £8 on Saturday and £5 on Sunday. It’s worth noting that children’s prices are just £1 on all sessions, and senior citizens can also pay just £1 on Tuesday and Sunday.

The popular ‘Six Pack’ deal is available but needs to be pre-booked, this includes entrance and racecard, 2 drinks, snack bar meal, a Tote jackpot bet and uniquely it also includes return admission for up to 4 guests. When you consider that this alone is worth £32 (based on Saturday admission prices) this promotion is excellent value.

Poole greyhound stadium is all year, and racing takes place every Saturday morning as well as Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. The opening times and race times are as follows;

• Tuesday – doors open 6pm, first race – 6.47pm
• Saturday – doors open 11.00am, first race – 11.33am *
• Saturday – doors open 6.30pm, first race – 7.30pm
• Sunday – doors open 5.00pm, first race – 6.00pm

*The Saturday morning meeting doesn’t run all year and if you are planning on visiting, always check with the venue before travelling.

The biggest race that is held annually at Poole is the Golden Crest. The event originated at the Eastville Stadium in Bristol and was inaugurated in 1937. When Eastville closed in 1997, there was a three-year gap before it was re-introduced at Poole greyhound stadium. It is run over 450m (except in 2014 when the distance was increased to 640m), and the current champion is King Elvis who is trained by Liz McNair. The track record was set in 2013 when Daddy Knowsbest ran a time of 26.20, to put that astonishing time into context, the first winner in 1937 was Wily Captain with a time of 30.48.

Interesting Facts about the Stadium

Although Poole dog racing started at the stadium in 1960, the venue was constructed in the early ’30s as an attempt to provide entertainment for the local population. The area was suffering in the Great Depression, and the multi-purpose arena was seen as a way to raise morale. In 1933, Poole Town F.C became tenants and would stay there for the next 61 years before the local authority, citing falling attendances, evicted them. The stadium does, however, owe a debt of gratitude to the football club as two FA Cup runs (1946 and 1962) financed the grandstand at the time.

As is quite common at greyhound stadiums, it was speedway that entertained the crowds first. The Poole Pirates were founded in 1948 and have been at the venue ever since. Highly successful, the Pirates have won Elite League Championship in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015. They also scooped the SGB Premiership Champions in 2018. The modern facilities at the stadium are primarily due to the venue hosting the 2004 Speedway World Cup final.

While speedway has been ever present, it is a different story for greyhound racing. The first race was held in 1961 when Southampton stadium owners Charlie Knott Sr. & Charlie Knott Jr. invested and built a track to host the races. Financial difficulties led to greyhound racing being cancelled in 1985, and it didn’t return back until 1994.

The future of the venue looks very bright. In 2012, Poole was successful in obtaining a BAGS contract and in 2018, a deal with Arena Racing Company (ARC) secured the long-term future of the Tuesday and Sunday evening meetings.
